Job summary

The Red Hat Sales team is looking for a Middleware Solutions Architect to join the Presales team in Johannesburg, South Africa. In this role, you will guide the adoption of next generation application platforms and technologies and support our customers in their digital transformation journey. You’ll be the catalyst who creates possibilities, solves problems, and establishes working relationships with new and existing customers. You'll listen to the technical challenges of our customers and suggest various solution paths and you’ll work with the Sales team to provide deep technical insight for Red Hat JBoss Middleware solutions and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform. We'll need you to have good understanding of JEE and traditional application servers, technologies and design patterns for Microservices, reactive systems, and serverless with experience applying them to solve real world problems. As a Middleware Solutions Architect, you will also need excellent communication and people skills, as you will be in front of customers on a daily basis and will sometimes travel to client sites.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Develop strategic relationships with Red Hat’s customers to become a trusted advisor for Red Hat’s solutions
  • Discover and analyze customer business and technical needs
  • Collaborate with the Sales and Technical Delivery teams to bring our customers the most efficient solutions
  • Design, build, and present complex solutions to customers
  • Support the Sales team with recommendations for development and implementation of complex offerings and solutions to achieve sales quotas
  • Help the Red Hat sales teams meet revenue goals, deployment, and service objectives while sustaining good relationships with our customers
  • Support evaluations and technical proofs of concepts for our offerings
  • Assist in responding to customer inquiries, including requests for proposals (RFPs) and requests for information (RFIs)
  • Work with the Engineering, Marketing, and Business teams on launches of information about our offerings

Required skills

  • Experience as a sales engineer, consultant, IT architect, or equivalent supporting enterprise accounts
  • Excellent presentation skills; proven record of developing relationships at engineering and executive levels
  • Ability to interpret customer business and technical needs
  • Initiative in building technical relationships with customers
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Experience working with C-level executives
  • Good documentation skills and presentation experience with mid to large-sized audiences
  • Good knowledge of and experience with Java, JEE, NodeJS, DevOps, Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), and middleware architectures in general
  • Good understanding of industry trends and potential future directions
  • Willingness to travel up to 50%

The following are considered a plus:


  • Experience with Red Hat JBoss Middleware offerings and technologies
  • Experience with emerging technologies around microservices
  • Additional experience with IBM WebSphere and Oracle WebLogic
