Job summary

The Red Hat Quality Engineering (QE) team is looking for a Quality Engineer to join our Red Hat Ceph Storage QE Test team in Sunnyvale, CA. In this role, you will develop performance testing  for an entire offering within our extensive portfolio of innovative storage technologies. To do so successfully, you'll first need to be an expert in the offering architectures, how they integrate with other solutions, and the ways they're used by our customers. As a Quality Engineer of performance, you will serve as a go-to person to work with Red Hat Ceph Storage. This is a great opportunity to make significant contributions and improvements to Red Hat's quality and performance engineering, while also participating in upstream testing efforts in the open source community.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Define test strategies, methodologies, processes, and procedures
  • Investigate and recommend test architecture and associated infrastructure pieces to support the quality engineering methodology, process, and procedures
  • Investigate and recommend testing and performance tools, techniques and methods
  • Design and develop software-defined storage solutions for hosting compute, GPU, and virtualized workloads in the infrastructure using solutions like Red Hat Ceph Storage
  • Test performance and applications, including Database, Virtualization, and new applications and features
  • Analyze source code of an offering and propose appropriate test strategies
  • Perform root-cause analysis for performance optimization and architecture
  • Participate in and contribute to weekly team meetings
  • Interact with external partners and customers regarding testing strategies
  • Schedule and lead reviews with senior management
  • Provide accurate and timely status of performance testing efforts and quality statistics to the engineering team

Required skills

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in IT or computer science with 3-6 years of related experience and training; equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered
  • Expert in programming languages like Python, Perl, Java, and C
  • Deep and practical understanding of Linux environment; experience developing in Linux
  • Domain expertise in storage-related technologies including block-level storage and file systems
  • Expertise in defining and analyzing metrics and managing technical debt
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Working experience with performance testing techniques like performance workload modeling, establishing baselines, services monitoring, and profiling system performance
  • Experience in configuring and implementing scripts using performance test tools like JMeter, Tsung, Locust, or Load runner
  • Experience in testing the performance of RESTful API
  • Experience handling test data in various formats (JSON, XML, CSV, etc.) while understanding data storage, encoding, encryption, data transformation, and related concepts
  • Understanding of system’s technical architecture, and the ability to identify the performance implications for different layers of system based on design discussions or architecture documents

The following are considered a plus:

  • Experience with continuous integration (CI) and automation frameworks
  • Background in test-driven development or agile methodologies
  • Familiarity with open source solutions and technology
