Job summary

Improve and support the mission-critical release toolchain used to develop, test, package, and release all Red Hat solutions to customers. Red Hat's DevOps engineering team is looking for an Associate Software Engineer to join us in Westford, MA. In this role, you will contribute components, many of which will be open source tools and based upon Red Hat’s technologies. You'll work in a global team of talented software engineers who are passionate about good software development processes that promote quality code. This is an excellent opportunity to have direct impact on the success of Red Hat’s business while learning and working in an open source culture.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Improve the tools and processes used to deliver Red Hat’s offerings to customers; ensure these tools are robust, reliable, and ready for the next generation of open source technologies
  • Learn our existing tools and Red Hat’s solutions like RPM, Red Hat Satellite, and Pulp; dive into emerging technologies like Docker and containers to understand what they mean for our release infrastructure
  • Design, develop, code review, document, and test software using sound development methodologies
  • Work with the rest of the team to continuously improve our processes

Required skills

  • Experience with software development in Python
  • Knowledge of the Linux operating system
  • Passion for software development
  • Ability to work as a member of a global team with good written and verbal skills

The following are considered a plus:


  • Understanding of tools for source management like Git, code reviews, and continuous integration (CI) tools like Jenkins
  • Understanding of unit test frameworks (unittest, pytest, nosetest)
  • Understanding of open source packaging, REST APIs, Ansible by Red Hat, and agile or scrum methodologies
