Job summary

Red Hat’s Consulting team is looking for a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to join our Open Innovation Labs team remotely in Boston, MA or anywhere in the U.S. In this role, you will work as part of a dynamic, diverse, and exceptional global team at Red Hat. You’ll help us solve big problems for our customers, partners, and communities using the power of open source.You’ll work with some of the industry's newest technologies around containers and innovative enterprise open source solutions, including Ansible by Red Hat, Docker, Kubernetes, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, software-defined networking, traditional networking equipment, core servers and virtualization technologies, operating systems, and Red Hat OpenStack Platform. You’ll apply them to all major public cloud providers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure, as well as to our own internal private cloud. As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and operating our labs' push button Infrastructure. You’ll code and automate the traditional roles of a system administrator at scale. You’ll consult with customers, teaching them the art and science of site reliability engineering and helping them build great new teams and software. You’ll also enable the wider open source community to contribute to the further development of our push button infrastructure. Successful applicants must reside in a state where Red Hat is registered to do business.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Contribute to, develop, and expand the various client and server-side frameworks related to the push button infrastructure running on Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform and Red Hat OpenStack Platform
  • Be a leading contributor to automation of infrastructure management and help showcase excellent infrastructure as code (IaC) implementations using Ansible by Red Hat and other technologies
  • Work alongside customers, consulting with them on how to manage, deploy, and operate cloud solutions at scale using the principles of sIte reliability engineering
  • Work with a team of architects, consultants, and partners to design, deploy, and apply our solutions
  • Work with Red Hat's Quality Engineering (QE) and Productization teams to increase value and stability for our customers and users
  • Evaluate solutions and technologies; make recommendations and present reports
  • Maintain technical competency in all aspects of our technology and market
  • Mentor junior engineers at Red Hat and within our customers, partners, and communities

Required skills

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical discipline
  • Experience in Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solutions like Red Hat OpenStack Platform, and Virtualization technologies like Red Hat Virtualization, oVirt, and VMware
  • Solid knowledge and experience with Linux OS, preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or Fedora Core
  • Experience using public cloud solutions like AWS, Google Compute Engine (GCE), and Microsoft Azure
  • Practical Level 2 or Level 3 networking experience and knowledge; SDN knowledge is a plus
  • Working experience with shared storage technologies like NFS, iSCSI, CIFS, and Red Hat Ceph Storage
  • System Provisioning using PXE and Kickstart or similar solutions; Red Hat Satellite is a plus
  • Solid analytical, problem-solving and communication skills
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies, follow industry trends, and work both on your own and as part of a team
  • Passion for open source software as a user or developer
  • Active online presence with an interest in open source community development
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the year within North America and internationally
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and other container tools is a big plus
  • Datacenter architecture and design knowledge and experience is a plus
