    Job summary

    Develop features in support of new hardware designs and submissions and review upstream patches. The Red Hat Kernel Platform Enablement team is looking for a Software Engineer to join us in Westford, MA or Raleigh, NC. In this role, you will work as part of a distributed team on the development of new versions of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). You’ll need to have solid knowledge of Linux internals and hardware architectures.

    Primary job responsibilities

    • Develop features to support new models of hardware platforms
    • Submit and review patches in the upstream Linux kernel
    • Backport and test patches from the upstream kernel to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
    • Investigate bugs by recreating each customer-specific environment in our lab and determine solutions
    • Collaborate with partners and the upstream community to to support new hardware functionality
    • Analyze and provide fixes for software defects encountered by quality engineering (QE) teams and customers

    Required skills

    • Bachelor's degree in computer science, or equivalent professional experience
    • Experience with Linux or UNIX software development
    • Understanding of multiple CPU architectures
    • Proficient in the "C" programming language
    • Previous contributions to open source projects
    • Ability to debug OS primitives
    • Willingness to work with a team geographically distributed around the world
    • Good understanding of the open source development model
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

    The following are considered a plus:


    • Master’s degree in a technical discipline
    • Familiarity with continuous integration (CI) software development models
    • Proficiency with RPM packaging
    • Understanding of multiple CPU architectures (Intel 64, AMD64, and ARM Power)
