    Job summary

    The Red Hat Ansible Tower Engineering team is looking for a Principal Sustaining Engineer to join us in Durham, NC. In this role, you will support released versions of Ansible Tower by Red Hat by identifying root causes and fixing complex issues, assist technical support with customer escalations, identify and resolve gaps in the continuous integration (CI) pipeline, and develop needed enhancements for our offerings. You’ll need to be someone who is smart, friendly, collaborative, and curious, who loves to learn and teach as both a mentor and a mentee, and who is sensitive to the perspectives of others and cares about creating a positive and inclusive environment. You’ll also need to have good judgement on technical tradeoffs and enjoy moving offerings forward quickly while working at a sustainable pace.

    Primary job responsibilities

    • Troubleshoot customer-reported issues, guide in-house issue reproduction, determine root causes, describe issues in detail to fellow engineers and customers, and develop software code changes to resolve issues
    • Regularly communicate and interact with open source communities to provide guidance and understand issues; review community PRs
    • Work closely with technical support, documentation, and quality assurance (QA) teams to identify and deliver improvements to test automation, documentation, and knowledge base for Ansible Tower by Red Hat
    • Develop and deliver customer-focused enhancements in maintenance releases
    • Provide mentorship to other engineers, including techniques and methodologies of troubleshooting and supporting the Ansible Tower by Red Hat offering
    • Investigate and recommend strategic improvements for tools and processes to advance and expand efficiency and throughput

    Required skills

    • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a technology-related discipline, or recent relevant experience
    • 8+ years of experience in software development and engineering
    • Fluent in Python development; 3+ years of experience developing with Python
    • System administrator-level Linux skills in one or more Linux distributions; Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification is a big plus
    • Experience with cloud technologies like EC2, Google Cloud Platform (GCP), VMware, or Red Hat OpenStack Platform
    • Experience with open source communities via mailing lists, bug reports, patches, etc.
    • Outstanding communication and documentation skills
    • Experience with Ansible by Red Hat, especially writing Ansible by Red Hat playbooks and roles; experience with similar automation technologies like Salt, Chef, or Puppet is a plus
    • Upstream involvement in open source projects like submitting patches for upstream inclusion is a big plus
    • Understanding of software development life cycle (SDLC) and agile or scrum processes
    • Experience with Django and Python-based REST clients is a plus
