    Job summary

    The Red Hat Networking Services team is looking for an experienced Principal Software Engineer to join us in Westford, MA. In this role, you will collaborate with the open source community, focusing on the Linux networking kernel space and core networking areas in user space. You'll maintain our open source code base, as well as the code base for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). We’ll need you to have practical Linux networking development (coding and patches) in either user space or Kernel space. As a Principal Software Engineer, we'll expect you to be interested in the opportunity to shape the modern Linux networking, both upstream and in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) solutions. We also expect you to understand how a packet goes from NIC to the driver - to kernel space - to user space and onto the application. This role can be based anywhere in the U.S. or Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region, but ideally in Westford, MA.

    Primary job responsibilities

    • Participate in the broader upstream Linux community
    • Contribute with new developments
    • Backport fixes to Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) releases
    • Emerge user space components like DPDK, containers, or Open vSwitch
    • Work with third party partners on their hardware for networking offload features
    • Package different technologies for public consumption

    Required skills

    • 5-10 years of experience working with Linux networking
    • Familiarity with SKB and how it is passed around in the kernel
    • Understanding of the differences between VLAN, bridge, bond, and subnet
    • Experience submitting patches upstream
    • Coding, reviewing, debugging, patching experience with C
    • Experience developing on Linux using C, Git, shell, common user, and kernel space APIs
    • Good written and verbal communication skills in English, allowing you to communicate on calls with other team members
    • Interest in advancing Linux networking globally to make it adequate for cloud and virtualization needs
