The Red Hat Open Innovation Labs (Labs) team is looking for an Application Development Consulting Engineer to join us. In this role, you will guide the strategic success of our customers using Red Hat’s open source software, while working as part of one of the industry’s best teams of open source developers and partnering with our customers to build software systems of tomorrow. You’ll work in a residency-style engagement at the Labs together with customers in small teams to build, test, and iterate over innovative application prototypes attached to real business value. As an Application Development Consulting Engineer, you will use a variety of modern application development practices along with emerging technologies from the communities of open source to get it done. You’ll serve as a subject matter expert who cocreates innovative software solutions using emerging technology and modern software design methods. You’ll team up with customers and partners to accelerate their application development projects and to teach them new ways of working together to get things done. As you do so, you will create infectious enthusiasm for building great software using principles of open source culture. Successful applicants must reside in a state where Red Hat is registered to do business.

    Primary job responsibilities

    • Team up with our customers to rapidly build application prototypes in our Labs or within Customer pop-up labs, using modern application development practices and emerging open source technologies
    • Help us cover domains including web applications, native and hybrid mobile applications, microservices, API management, and web-scale architectures, DevOps engineering and application delivery, container-based continuous delivery (CD), cloud automation, and Everything as Code
    • Team up with Red Hat and the open source community to engineer Labs-based software solutions, designed to further accelerate our customers’ success at Labs
    • Become a trusted advisor to our customers, helping them achieve business success in an ever-changing technology landscape
    • Use your critical thinking skills to tackle tough problems in an innovative way
    • Travel to customers locations

    Required skills

    • Active Top Secret clearance
    • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical discipline
    • Experience with Java, particularly focused on cloud-native web development
    • Experience developing RESTful microservices or event-driven architectures
    • Experience with Spring boot, vert.x, quarkus, Go, and Python
    • Experience with data, databases, datastores, SQL, and NoSQL
    • Experience with container development using Docker or equivalent
    • Experience deploying cloud-native applications to Red Hat OpenShift, Kubernetes, and Amazon Experience with automation tools like Red Hat Ansible Automation, Puppet, or Chef
    • Experience with continuous integration (CI) and CD and tools like Jenkins, Tekton, Travis, Circle CI, SonarQube, Nexus, etc.; ability to fully implement CI and CD from code check-in to production deployments
    • Experience with automated testing
    • Applied knowledge of working in agile, scrum, and DevOps teams
    • Ability to perform customer-facing activities in a fast-paced environment with short timeframes
    • Comfortable working with highly distributed teams, including interaction with open source communities
    • Solid written and verbal communication and presentation skills
    • Ability to study on your own and quickly learn and put into practice new topics
    • Passion for open source software
