    Job summary

    The Red Hat R&D team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join us in Westford, MA. In this role, you will oversee the direction, design, and implementation of our innovative technology. You’ll participate in the solutions release cycle and in the formal requirements and engineering response processes to coordinate open source requirements and expectations. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will also contribute to open source projects while delivering enterprise-ready offerings based on these projects that are suitable for use by our customers.

    Primary job responsibilities

    • Plan and carry out the delivery of major and minor improvements to the Avocado Test Framework
    • Plan and manage the life cycle and compatibility of the Avocado Test Framework across multiple versions, including long-term stability (LTS) releases
    • Guide the architectural evolution of the Avocado Test Framework by promoting and upholding high-quality software architectural design principles
    • Develop technical plans for new features and improvements by writing request for comment (RFC) documents
    • Defend and review the technical soundness of proposals in RFCs and other design documents and incorporate feedback into final blueprints for the development of new features
    • Design and develop features that advance the state of the art in virtualization testing
    • Review and provide feedback on proposed code changes, maintaining high standards of code quality
    • Promote a culture of test automation inside Red Hat and in open source communities in which Red Hat operates
    • Advocate for and champion the Avocado Test Framework as the preferred testing framework for Red Hat’s offerings and components and for the open source communities in which Red Hat operates
    • Support the upstream QEMU and libvirt development and quality engineering (QE) communities
    • Support Red Hat’s objectives for automated testing and continuous integration (CI) efforts
    • Guarantee the availability of the Avocado Testing Framework on various architectures and operating system distributions by providing native and easily deployable software packages
    • Ensure that automated tests based on the Avocado Test Framework are giving a consistent experience across the various supported platforms
    • Collaborate on university research activities as directed
    • Oversee the adoption and deployment of the Avocado Test Framework in CI and QE automated testing environments, particularly in open source communities in which Red Hat operates as well as in offerings and components within Red Hat’s portfolio





    Required skills

    • Bachelor’s degree (U.S. or foreign equivalent) in computer science or a related field and 5 years of experience in the job offered or in a related role, or no degree and 7 years of experience in the job offered or in a related role
    • 5 years of experience with developing software in an open source environment; managing a software project using GitHub, Gerrit, or similar technologies; Python programming language (both version 2 and version 3); C and C++ programming; decentralized version control systems like Git; creating and extending elegant software architectures using modern software design principles; developing state-of-the-art software testing frameworks; virtualization technologies, including KVM, QEMU, and libvirt; and deploying and debugging enterprise-scale, advanced virtualization environments including clustered and cloud-based environments with high-availability services, redundant and resilient networking, and storage solutions
    • 3 years of experience working as a maintainer of an open source project, developing software compatible with Windows and Linux environments, and Debugging Linux kernel, boot loader, and related system-level software
