Job summary

The Red Hat Developers Business Unit team is looking for an experienced Principal Product Manager to join us. In this role, you will guide the developer experience across integrated developer environments (IDEs) and a seamless experience across an ecosystem of extensions. We want the best person on our team, so location is flexible, although most teams operate in eastern North American or western European time zones. You’ll work as part of a team guiding the future of cloud-native development environments. You will focus on the total developer experience within their IDE of choice and how it connects to our platforms, uses our offerings, and is enhanced by these interactions. As a Principal Product Manager responsible for the developer experience of various IDE platforms, you will work with your peer product managers across multiple business units, our customers, our engineering and support teams, and other concerned stakeholders to analyze and understand market trends and competitive advancements so that you can continue to improve developer experience within and across IDEs. You’ll work with offerings and projects like Red Hat CodeReady Workspaces, Eclipse Desktop, Eclipse Che, VS Code, IntelliJ, Kubernetes and various extensions and enabling technologies.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Meet with customers, partners, and analysts to gather input on the jobs development teams are focused on, where they’re finding success and where they’re struggling
  • Use outside-in data to feed and maintain a vision for the developer experience our users will enjoy when coding, building, and deploying applications from their preferred IDEs
  • Work continually to turn your vision into a set of clearly articulated and rigorously prioritized epics and stories that can be communicated by the multiple engineering teams working on IDEs, command line interface (CLI) tools, and extensions
  • Work directly with all stakeholders to ensure that backlog priorities are in alignment with corporate strategies
  • Track and report on the progress of work from the product delivery and market impact perspectives, feeding the data back into plans and micro-adjustments
  • Engage with marketing teams across the company and at partners to provide a clear and concise rationale for the solutions and enhancements we release

Required skills

  • Experience working as an enterprise software or Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product manager
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with open source projects, processes, and business models
  • Deep knowledge of engineering team processes focused on agile or scrum, tools, and challenges
  • Ability to make and defend hard trade-offs between time-to-market, community engagement, and the features of our offerings
  • Familiarity with current software development tools and ability to quickly learn new ones including IDEs, developer-focused CLIs, Git, build systems, continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) systems, containers, Kubernetes, Red Hat OpenShift, Tekton, Istio, Knative, and serverless or Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) technologies
  • Distaste for shelfware and an understanding that free usage of an offering is more valuable in the long run
  • Proven record of persuading others without having direct authority over them
